Remembranceday in Papendrecht

2025.11.11 REMEMBRANCEDAY IN PAPENDRECHT.

In Engeland, Canada en Australië wordt het einde van de 1e wereldoorlog (11 november 1918 om 11 uur) ieder jaar herdacht.
De Remembrance Sunday is in Engeland een grootse herdenking. Door de jaren heen is het ook hun herdenking van de 2e wereldoorlog geworden.
In Papendrecht hebben we onze officiële Dodenherdenking op 4 mei, maar vanwege de in Papendrecht begraven Engels-Australische bemanning van de Lancaster Popeye hebben we enkele jaren ook 11 november officieel herdacht. Dit jaar is het wat kleiner gehouden. De Engelse vlag was gehesen.

Aanwezig waren om 11 uur: Edgar Zaagsma (Consul Oorlogsgraven), Pieter van Turenhout (beheerder begraafplaats), Sandra Verdoorn (4 mei Comité). Wim (oud-voorzitter 4 mei Comité) en Marianne de Leur en Margré van Wijngaarden(Dorpsbehoud/Werkgroep Lancaster Popeye).

Een houten poppy kruisje werd geplaatst bij het graf van Herbert Luton, uit Engeland naar ons verstuurd door zijn nicht Jill Priddle.

Wim noemde de namen:
Australië: Charles Alfred Barlow, Colin Mervyn Clarey:
Engeland: Douglas Hancock, Samuel Edward Kirkland, Edward John Line, Herbert Charles Luton en Arthur Walter Middleton.

Margré sprak: Since your families can not be here today, we want to read you a poem.

REMEMBRANCEDAY. by mrs. Becky Hemsley
Today we're remembering all of those who
now rest in the places where poppies once grew
Remembering those who were lost to the sea
whilst bravely crusading so we could be free
We'll think of those heroes who marched and who fell
who fought for their lives and for our lives as well
The heroes who flew and who fought in the skies
deprived of their chances to say their goodbyes
We will not forget what a difference they made
the risks that they took and the price that they paid
We'll give up our thanks when we think of that cost
the sacrifices and the lives that were lost
Yes, here on the cemetary we'll reflect on the way
they gave their tomorrows for all our todays
So we'll wear our poppies of black and of red
a symbol of grief and the blood that was shed
And here in the silence this 11th November
we'll take a moment to stop... and remember
